McGrath completed two phases of construction on Ameren Missouri’s $8.5 million switching station on Martin Luther King (MLK) Drive in downtown St. Louis.  The combined site work performed by McGrath was $1.4 million.

The 13.8kV Ameren MLK project, estimated at $42.5 million, is part of a larger Ameren Missouri investment to upgrade electric service in downtown St. Louis over the coming decades.

The 10-week Phase 1 work was performed during one of the coldest and snowiest winters on record. The project included mass excavation, soil reclamation and soil remediation. McGrath removed abandoned sewer pipes and cisterns, and excavated soil up to 20’ deep, using a rock separator to remove unusable debris. Suitable fill was reclaimed and recycled on-site to create a stable base for structures.

Phase 2 construction included 70 structural piers with eleven concrete pad foundations, a perimeter fence and a new city sidewalk.
